Technologies and Materials for Restoration Applications

Theoretical lessons
  • Natural and artificial stone materials: classification, properties and application.
  • Problems of preservation and restoration of natural and artificial stone materials, technologies and material employed, requirements for treatments.
  • Protective and adhesive polymeric materials: requirements and properties. Examples: resins polymerized in situ, semi-natural and biologic products.
  • Resins and glues from natural products, rubbers and glues of vegetal and animal origin.
  • Wood: properties and degradation process. Diagnostic and restoration techniques.
  • Paper: properties and degradation process. Analysis, preservation and washing procedures of ancient documents.
  • Textiles: properties and degradation process. Analysis, preservation and washing procedures of ancient fabrics.
  • Traditional ceramic materials: properties and degradation process. Restoration and preservation of ancient framework of majolica, pottery and terracotta.
  • Glasses: properties and degradation process. Restoration and preservation of ancient glasses and church windows.
Laboratory
  • Examples of the main techniques and procedures used for diagnostic purposes of different damaged and altered materials and for the restoration of the same materials.
